The so-called warm colours are pink, orange and the red colours.
They
are characterized by having a long wavelength. The cold colours are
primarily blue, violet and grey. Cold colours have a short
wavelength.
Generally cold colours have a calming effect and therefore they are
suitable for e.g. backgrounds. Warm colours, on the other hand, are
active and attract and keep our attention.
Combining cold and warm colours creates a good contrast. But as they
have different wavelengths our eyes will focus on each individual
colour all the time. Therefore colours as pure blue and pure red can
have a flickering effect when put together.
